Our Guardian Program

We believe our breeding dogs deserve to live as loved members of a family throughout their breeding career. Our Guardian Program allows our dogs to have their own family and home while still being part of our breeding program.

Guardian families raise and care for their dog as their own pet, while Big Red Paw Doodles retains breeding rights. Once the dog's breeding career is complete, we will spay or neuter the dog and transfer full ownership to the Guardian family.

We want our Guardian dogs to have the same kind of life as any other family pet lots of love, attention, exercise, training, and time with their family. We carefully choose our Guardian families and want to make sure the program is a good fit for everyone, especially the dog.

What is a Guardian program?

A Guardian Home is a family that provides a loving, permanent home for one of our breeding dogs. The dog lives with the Guardian family as their own pet, while Big Red Paw Doodles retains breeding rights for the agreed-upon period of time.

Our Guardian dogs are part of the family. They live in the home, receive regular training and socialization, and get the love, attention, exercise, grooming, and care they need.

Once their breeding career is complete, we will spay or neuter the dog and transfer full ownership to the Guardian family.

What Does It Cost?

There is no upfront cost to become a Guardian family.

Guardian families are responsible for the normal costs of caring for their dog, including routine veterinary care, vaccinations, heartworm and flea/tick prevention, grooming, quality food, training, and other everyday pet expenses.

Big Red Paw Doodles covers the costs associated with breeding, pregnancy, whelping, and breeding-related veterinary care.

requirements

• Reside within one hour of Schertz, TX and have reliable transportation to bring the dog to and from Big Red Paw Doodles when needed.

• Own your own home with a fenced yard, or commit to keeping the dog on a leash whenever outdoors.

• Have no intact dogs living in your home to help prevent unintended breeding.

• If guardianing a female, be willing to learn about and help manage her heat cycles and transport her to us as needed.

• During breeding, females will stay with us for approximately one week. They will return home about one week before their expected delivery and remain with us through whelping and nursing (approximately 8-9 weeks).

• If guardianing a male, availability for approximately one week at a time will be discussed on an individual basis.

• Feed a quality dog food; we recommend Purina Pro Plan (non-grain-free).

• Cover routine veterinary care, heartworm and flea/tick prevention, grooming, boarding, and other normal pet ownership expenses.

• Keep the dog well-socialized and groomed, and maintain open communication with Big Red Paw Doodles regarding the dog's health and care.

• The dog must live indoors as part of your family and be provided with a safe, loving, and appropriate home environment.

• Commit to the dog for its entire lifetime. Once the dog's breeding responsibilities with Big Red Paw Doodles are complete, we will spay/neuter the dog and transfer full ownership to the Guardian family.
